Formed in 1875, Toshiba is recognised as one of Japan’s most prestigious technology companies. The first range of Toshiba laptops was launched in April 1985 and the Toshiba T100 was the world’s first IBM-compatible laptop computer. The first range of Toshiba laptops weren’t very impressive when compared to today’s standard of Toshiba laptops – 256k bytes of memory, an Intel Corp. 80C88 processor – but at the time, these laptops were state-of-the-art. Of course, if Toshiba laptops weighed 4.1 kilograms these days, as the T100 did at the time, they would not be very successful. Still, in 1985 these Toshiba laptops sold almost 10,000 units. Remarkable for a time when laptop computers were still in their infancy.

As technology improved and Toshiba laptops became smaller and cheaper, they became more popular.
